The 2019 Pet-Nat of Melon de Bougogne is a slight departure from previous vintages. After a small period of maceration on the skins, in order to pick up some structure and infuse the golden gifts of the ripe skins, we fermented this wine in tank and bottled by hand. Unlike previous iterations, we decided not to disgorge this wine, allowing a steady fermentation closer to dryness and a preservation of richness and weight. This vintage reminds us of the fleshy, luscious juice of mandarins and clementines. The lees in bottle emphasize a slightly tart backbone and provide a kiss of provocative bitterness, akin to the pith of the citruses we mentioned. This wine will have you wondering why you bothered making a mimosa!

2018 "All Ewe Need Is Love," is a one-of-a-kind Pinot Noir release for a special cause. We created this special release of Pinot Noir as a way to raise money for our continued efforts to nurture our site and diversify our farm system. Every penny from the sales of this wine will go towards the development of infrastructure for our sheep and poultry project, as well as the improvement and scaling of our Farm Share, so we can offer the experience to more of our community in the future. It is a youthful and vibrant bottling of Pinot Noir, something of a rarity at Johan, which reminds us that Pinot Noir can be as whimsical and fun as the label suggests.

The objective of our Pinot Noir is to create a bottling that most accurately represents our sense of place in a given vintage. We carefully select parcels of fruit from every rootstock/scion combination, aspect, vine age, and soil profile, creating a collage of the diverse expressions of our vineyard through the lens of Pinot Noir. The 2017 included 57% whole cluster and after fermenting using native yeasts, spent 10 months in 28% new wood, with the remainder completing elevage in neutral french oak.

We had the rare chance to experiment with a few particularly bright lots of our Gruner Veltiner, which is a coveted grape in our winery. This experiment is a blend of our skin-maceration trials of 2018, with a portion of direct pressed wine included, as well.

This is hands down one the most exotic and uniquely Pét-Nat bottlings to date. It's aromatics are evocative of asian pear, cloves, and white pepper, which are matched with saline, tropical fruit qualities on the palate. A touch of residual sugar gives the wine a bit more weight, but it is balanced by a vibrant acidity.

Our 2017 Chardonnay is a hollistic representation of our site through the lens of Chardonnay. This wine is a four-barrel blend of primarily high-acid non-dijon clones, with a smaller percentage of our fleshier dijon selections. After direct pressing, the juice was blended, and barreled down. They fermented and aged for 18 months in 50% first and second fill oak barrels and 50% neutral. The wine is laser focused on the palate with acid and salinity. The aromatics sing with fruit and oak working in balanced synergy. On our site, chardonnay yields one of the most expressive and impressive wines in any given vintage.

The varietal character of Grüner Veltliner is intense and highly unique. There is a range of fruit maturity with which this grape can be harvested to lend itself to an array of different styles. The resulting wines can vary from lean and herbal, to highly textured and exotic smelling, depending on the vineyards ability to ripen the fruit. Our site produces fruit that wants to be rich and exotic, producing significant texture while retaining focus and balance. We prefer this style for our own taste and encourage it by aging the wine in larger format oak puncheons for 10 months with full solids.

For the Pinot Gris "Drueskall," we ferment our fruit in multiple lots, utilizing whole berry fermentation, whole cluster fermentation, and carbonic maceration in different proportions depending on the vintage. The wine is in contact with the skins between 21 and 45 days, before barreling down for ~18 months. This multi-lot approach to "orange" Pinot Gris results in a wine with an assertive structure of tannin and acid, with detailed and exotic aromatics.

The "Nils" bottling highlights power and concentration we find in certain blocks each vintage. 2015 had all of the qualities that predicate a perfect "Nils" vintage. With a higher proportion of destemmed berries (65%), the fruit sings with a bit more gusto, drawing attention to brooding dark fruit flavors and earth. We see more fruit tannin providing silky texture that will continue to soften with age.
