the farm & winery
Located in Oregon’s Willamette Valley, within the Van Duzer Corridor AVA, Johan Vineyards is a 175-acre certified Biodynamic estate vineyard and winery with 87 acres under vine.
We see our farm as a living, self-sustaining ecosystem. We focus on building soil health naturally by composting, planting cover crops, and integrating animals like sheep and chickens. These animals help with natural fertilization and pest management, reducing the need for outside inputs. This gentle, hands-on approach keeps our soils full of life, which we believe leads to better, more expressive wines.
In addition, we maintain over 30 acres as a biodiversity preserve, which includes virgin oak savannah and biologically active riparian zones.
the biodynamic approach
Biodynamics farming combines the knowledge of premium viticulture practices with an understanding on how to treat the vineyard and its surrounding areas in order to achieve desired long-term farming results. We use the preparations 500-508 as prescribed by Rudolf Steiner, which are a range of homeopathic applications to promote healthy and holistic growth.
Our approach to biodynamic farming is rooted in caring for the land, the vines, and the wider environment, with every practice designed to support the health and vitality of our vineyard. As a Demeter-certified biodynamic estate, we uphold rigorous standards that support a healthy, self-sustaining farm and produce wines that truly reflect our sense of place.
